ANNOUNCEMENT

The 38th All India Conference of Dravidian Linguists will be held at V I Subramoniam Memorial ISDL Complex, ISDL Thiruvananthapuram from 17th  June to 19th June 2010 to coincide with the first Death Anniversary of Professor V.I. Subramoniam, beloved founder of ISDL.

Dr. B.B. Rajapurohit is the President of the 38th AICDL.

18-20 June 2009 at THIRUVANANTHAPURAM (Kerala)

REMEMBER PLEASE
This final announcement is a reminder note to the scholars who are to participate, to register immediately, avoid confusion, ensure a place of stay and secure copies of the papers.
Your co-operation is solicited to regulate the arrangements. An active group with less number of participants will be more productive than a crowd. Hence, the number will be severely restricted. About 300 scholars - Indian and foreign -are expected.

VENUE OF THE CONFERENCE
The International School of Dravidian Linguistics, St. Xavier's College P.O., Thiruvananthapuram 695 586, Kerala is the venue of the conference.
PAPERS
The deadline for the submission of abstract and full-length paper is 23rd May 2009 and 1st June 2009 respectively. Those received on time will be duplicated and circulated. Scholars are requested to bring copies of their papers and abstracts for circulation, if they are late in sending them to the Secretary. The language of the paper may be English or Tamil. To reach a wider audience, other language mediums are allowed but that will not carry the message of the paper to a larger audience. A registered participant can present only one paper . We will make efforts to print the papers as a bound volume. Therefore, please provide original inkjet / laser printouts of the abstract and full- length paper along with a copy on CD .

HOW TO REACH
Thiruvananthapuram is well-connected by air, train and frequent bus services. Those who are coming by train should get down at Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station. The distance between the station and I.S.D.L. Campus is about 19 km. Those who are coming by bus should get down at Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (K.S.R.T.C.) Bus Stand at Thampanoor, which is just opposite to the railway station.

RECEIVING THE DELEGATES
The host will open reception counters at Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station and Thampanoor K.S.R.T.C. Bus Stand. Please contact the volunteers there on your arrival. Participants are requested to inform their arrival details well in advance so as to avoid difficulties in reaching the venue.

ACCOMMODATION
For pleasant and comfortable stay, food and accommodation will be provided in the I.S.D.L. Campus. Those who need hotel accommodation should intimate the Secretary before 1st June 2009, which will be arranged, but hotel charges will have to be borne by the participant .

CONDITIONS FOR AWARDS AND PRIZES
The last date of entry for books, dictionaries, monographs, etc. is 16th May 2009 . All entries or recommendations should be sent to the Secretary-General of the Conference at Thiruvananthapuram.
1.
Mrs. Katre Memorial Prize for M.A. topper in Linguistics (2008), Rs. 750/-. (The Universities and Heads of Departments are requested to forward mark lists.)
2.
Award for the Best Paper in the Conference by a young full-time student or research scholar, Rs. 1,000/-. (Only bona fide students and full-time research scholars, who have produced certificates from their respective Heads of Departments stating their student status, can take part in the competition.)
3.
Award in the name of Prof. K. Anbazhakan for Translation of Tolkappiyam in any international language, Rs. 3,000/-. The book should have been published within a period of 3 years before 1st May 2009.
4.
Award for the best Monograph on Dravidian Tribes, Rs. 3,000/-. It should have been published within a period of 10 years before 1st May 2009.
5.
C. Achuta Menon Prize for the Best Article or Book published on `Computer and Language' , Rs. 2,000/-. It should have been published in an Indian journal and by an Indian, within a period of 3 years before 1st May 2009.
6.
Dr. George Jacob Award for the Best Monograph on Dravidian Linguistics in any Indian language other than Dravidian, Rs. 2,500/-.It should have been published within a period of 10 years before 1st May 2009.
7.
Prof. K.M. Venkataramaiah Award for the Study of Linguistic Minorities , Rs. 3,000/-. It should be an Indian publication, written in any international language other than Indian, and published within a period of 5 years before 1st May 2009.
8.
Smt. Lachchmi Jessaram Gidwani Memorial Endowment to deliver a lecture on any aspect of Linguistics, Rs. 1,500/-. (The lecture is by invitation.)
9.
Hermann Gundert Endowment for the Best Dictionary, Lexicon or Encyclopaedia on any major Dravidian Language and Dravidian Tribal Language including Brahui, Rs. 3,000/-. It should have been published within a period of 10 years before 1st May 2009.
10.
Endowment of the Phonetic Society of India for a Monograph or Lecture, Rs. 3,000/-.
11.
Panneerselvam & Thavamani Panneerselvam Award for the Translation of a Book from Tamil to Kannada and Vice Versa, Rs. 5,000/-. The book should have been published within a period of 3 years before 1st May 2009.
12.
K.N. Kuppuswamy Award for a Lecture / Comparative Study of a Grammatical Text of Tamil, Sanskrit, Prakrit or Pali, Rs. 1,500/-.
13.
Prof. Nagamma Reddy Endowment to deliver a Lecture on any aspect of Speech Sciences, viz. phonetics, phonology, speech technology, speech recognition, computational linguistics. (The lecture is by invitation.)

SPECIAL ENDOWMENT LECTURES
Special endowment lectures will also be arranged as part of the conference.
HIGHLIGHTS
The books under production now in I.S.D.L. will be released.

With the aim of diversification of linguistic science, and to attend to its applied aspects, papers on important allied areas like Brain and Language, Forensic Linguistics, Speech Physics, Speech Disorders, Computational Linguistics, Language and Information Technology, Language and Education, Language and Literature, Linguistic Archaeology, etc. are invited.

Our endeavour is to update knowledge in Linguistics and related disciplines. The last date for intimating participation is 14th May 2009 . Extracts, reference lists, cuttings, charts, matters on floppies and CD-s, xeroxed matters and original copies of your publications in this regard will be appreciated. Please send them by 14th May 2009 . Free thinking and floating of `think-balloons' will attract the audience. Each paper-reader will have 30 minutes (20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion).

A book exhibition will be arranged. Please bring copies of your publications in any language on Linguistics, for display. Endowment lectures by eminent scholars will be announced at the conference.

I.S.D.L. Governing Council meets on 17th June 2009 .

Excellent cultural events will be arranged.
